How did you decide which places to visit? Our locations were chosen primarily based on three factors. Factor one was weather. We wanted to be able to enjoy our time in each place to the fullest extent, so we made sure that the month we visited each location made sense (e.g., visiting Arizona in July would not make sense!). Factor number two was our driving route. We didn't want to be driving from one coast to the other and back again every month! You get the gist. The final factor we considered was variety. We didn't want to visit only east coast locations, we didn't want to visit only big cities, we didn't want to visit only warm weather places, etc.
How long do you stay in each place? The goal is to stay in each location for as close to one month as possible. Because of Jake's work schedule, most of our travelling between locations will take place on weekends. This usually doesn't line up with the exact last day of the month, but we try our best to keep it close. The one exception to this will be Park City in the month of December, where we will be staying for three weeks instead of four due to coming home for the holidays.
What do you guys do for work while traveling? We were lucky enough to get approval from Jake's work for him to transition from hybrid to fully remote for the upcoming twelve months of the journey. He will continue to work with the same clients as before, adjusting with each location to remain on Chicago's time zone. Halle will be spending the year focusing on finishing up her master's degree online.
Where are you staying once you get to each place? No, we are not sleeping in our car! We will be renting AirBNBs in each location. AirBNB offers special rates for longterm stays, so prices are discounted from what they would normally be. On some of our longer drives that we can't complete in one day, we will be staying in a few hotels overnight to break up the drive.
Can we come visit you? Absolutely! One of the hardest parts about this journey is being away from our family and friends for so long, so PLEASE come visit! We have thought ahead and are planning for visitors, so most of our AirBNBs have two bedrooms or more! We plan on travelling with a high quality queen sized air mattress for guests as well.
